Championship — the week in brief

Stoke City completed eight summer signings by the 1 September deadline, with Luca Bombino’s transfer from San Diego FC among the arrivals. Chairman John Coates funded deals for Ethan Galbraith, George Hirst, Svante Ingelsson, Djibril Soumare, Luke Graham, Josh Griffiths and Ben Johnson, who joined on loan.

Middlesbrough finished transfer deadline day with two incoming and two outgoing players. Rokas Pukstas had signed on 31 August as the club’s tenth summer addition. Micah Hamilton and Alex Bangura departed, having not been assigned squad numbers for the season.

Bristol City beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor on 5 September. Rio Cardines assisted the leveller after Aaron Ramsey’s first-half strike gave Burnley the lead, while Sam Tickle remained largely untroubled before the interval. The win marked a second consecutive away victory for the Robins.

Hamza Choudhury signed a one-year contract with Sheffield United on 31 August, returning from Leicester City. The midfielder rejoined after a loan spell in the second half of the 2024/25 season. Derby County had also pursued the player before the Blades completed the deal.

Former Portsmouth goalkeeper Alan Knight died on 1 September aged 65, following a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2024. Knight made 801 appearances for Portsmouth between 1978 and 2000, a record for a goalkeeper at a single English club. He later served as coach and ambassador.

Crystal Palace beat Fulham 3-2 on 5 September, securing a fourth consecutive league victory at Craven Cottage. The result marked Pierre Sage’s first match in charge. Manchester City defeated Coventry 1-0 on the same day, while Hull City hosted Aston Villa in the day’s late kickoff.
