Championship Gameweek 33 Preview: Playoff Race Heats Up As Derby Day Looms
Gameweek 33 Overview: Competition:Sky Bet Championship Dates: Sat 21st to Sun 22nd February 2026 Number of Fixtures: 12 Hull City: Home vs QPR (Sat 12:30pm)
Gameweek 33 is one of the most loaded weekends of the Championship season so far. Coventry City sit back on top of the table after a statement Monday-night win over Middlesbrough, and if they follow it up by beating West Brom on Saturday, Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation could be confirmed at Bramall Lane on Sunday — one of the most extraordinary storylines the Championship has served up in years. Our Match of the Week sees Millwall host Portsmouth at The Den, a compelling mix of playoff ambition against pure survival fight. Meanwhile Hull City, three games without a win, need a home performance against an injury-ravaged QPR side to reignite their own push for the top six.

Derby Day Could Mean Doomsday for Wednesday: Sheffield Wednesday are teetering on the brink of relegation, and if Coventry win at The Hawthorns on Saturday, their fate could be sealed at Bramall Lane on Sunday — the first time in over 160 years of history that one Sheffield club has relegated the other at their own ground.
Coventry Back on Top: Mark Robins’ Sky Blues returned to the summit of the Championship with a stunning Monday-night dismantling of Middlesbrough, who had themselves been on a six-game winning run. The title race is very much alive, and how Coventry handle the pressure of being leaders while Middlesbrough reload at home to Oxford will define the coming weeks.
New Manager Bounces: Both Blackburn (Michael O’Neill, who started with a brilliant away win at QPR last weekend) and potentially Leicester (with Gary Rowett closing in on the manager’s role) are in their honeymoon phases. Leicester’s first game under a new boss — at home to Stoke — could see either a resurgence or further evidence that this squad is in deep trouble regardless of who’s in the dugout.
Millwall sit third in the Championship — two points above Ipswich with the Tractor Boys holding games in hand — and head into Saturday’s sold-out clash at The Den off the back of back-to-back away wins, including a hard-fought victory at Hillsborough. Portsmouth, managed by John Mussin who masterminded their promotion, park up in 19th place just four points above the drop zone and carrying a staggering 14 first-team injuries. They arrive, however, with momentum from a 3-1 midweek away win that briefly eased the pressure — setting up one of the most intriguing clashes of the weekend.

Player to Watch: Josh Coburn
👀 Player to Watch: Josh Coburn (Millwall)
Josh Coburn has been Millwall’s focal point as the lone striker this season and is the man Alex Neil is building his attack around. With Tommy Watson providing pace and creativity from the left and Femir Z supplying width on the right, Coburn’s physicality and ability to hold the ball up makes Millwall tick in the final third — and against a Portsmouth defence depleted by injuries, his direct running and aerial presence could be decisive.

BTP Verdict
The Den is a difficult place to visit at the best of times, and Portsmouth arriving with 14 absentees and midweek miles in the legs makes this a very tough assignment. Millwall may not have been at their fluid best recently, but they know how to grind out results at home, and that experience and physicality should tell. Portsmouth’s gutsy away win midweek may have drained the tank just when they need it most.

Millwall 2-1 Portsmouth

Coburn vs Injury-Hit Pompey Backline
Hull City Focus: Hull City vs QPR
The Opposition: QPR arrive at the MKM Stadium in poor form and with a heavily depleted squad through injury. They were beaten at home last weekend by a Blackburn side that had something to prove under new manager Michael O’Neill, and with little to play for and little in the tank, Martin Irons’ men look every inch like a side that has run out of ideas in the second half of the season.
Key Battle: Hull’s centre-backs will need to be solid rather than spectacular here — QPR’s threat is limited going forward, so the key will be whether Hull’s attacking play can find the breakthrough on a ground where they need to be winning to keep their playoff push intact.
What We Think: Hull have gone three games without a win — including a 4-0 FA Cup mauling by Chelsea and a 3-2 home defeat to Bristol City — and will be desperate to get back on track in front of their own fans. QPR look like a side going through the motions, and despite Hull’s data suggesting their xG profile has run slightly warm this season, the simple fact remains they are the better team by a comfortable margin. Expect a home win, even if it’s not vintage stuff.

Player to Watch: Ryan Giles
👀 Player to Watch: Ryan Giles (Hull City)
Ryan Giles has been one of the Championship’s standout left-backs this season, racking up 8 assists in 23 league appearances before a hamstring injury picked up at Middlesbrough on December 29th halted his momentum. He’s back fit and almost certain to start against QPR — and his timing couldn’t be better, with backup Matty Jacob now facing up to eight weeks out with an MCL injury, leaving Giles as Hull’s only natural option on that flank. With an xAG (expected assisted goals) of 5.3 this season, he’s one of the most creative wide players in the division — far outperforming most defenders in that metric — and a QPR side struggling for form and numbers defensively is exactly the kind of opponent he can run riot against.

BTP Verdict
Three games without a win is a blip, not a crisis — but Hull need to show they can handle the pressure of a playoff race. QPR’s injury problems and indifferent form make this the ideal opportunity to restore confidence and put some daylight between themselves and the teams nipping at their heels. Home advantage, quality in the squad, and a point to prove. Hull to win.

Final Thoughts
Gameweek 33 could be genuinely season-defining at both ends of the table. At the top, Coventry’s ability to back up their Middlesbrough performance against a West Brom side with nothing to offer will tell us a lot about their title credentials; at the bottom, the steel city derby on Sunday carries a relegation verdict that would be one for the ages. For Hull fans, this is a weekend to focus on our own business — three winless games need to end here, and QPR’s weakened side offers the perfect opportunity.
Best case for Hull City: Hull put in a dominant home display, win comfortably, and results elsewhere mean they climb back into the top four ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.
Worst case: Hull’s recent wobble continues, QPR nick something against the run of play, and Hull find themselves looking over their shoulder rather than up at the automatic spots.
Check back after the weekend for our full Gameweek 33 review with xG analysis!
