Championship · Matchday 12 · Bramall Lane

Sheffield Utd v Derby

Sheffield United are eleventh on fifteen points from eleven, and a win would give them back-to-back league victories for the first time this season — their record reads four wins, three draws and four defeats, with no two wins yet falling together. Derby are twenty-third on six points, with one win all season and three draws, and have lost three of their last five. Neither side creates much: Sheffield United average 1.06 expected goals a game and Derby 0.96. The difference is what they concede, 1.49 against 1.69, and on that evidence this is a game about which defence blinks rather than which attack fires.

Chris Wilder was asked about facing a side in Derby’s position, and said the Rams’ injury list does not make it a straightforward afternoon:

“I always like the games against Derby. We’ve had some really good games against them.”

He also framed the season his opposite number is having as among the hardest in the division. John Eustace, for his part, told Derbyshire Live that one of his players faces roughly twelve or thirteen weeks out, and set the tone for the run his side are on:

“When we’re in trouble, this is where the Derby County family has got to stick together and not look for any excuses.”

The recent meetings have been close and have not run one way. The Sheffield Star notes Sheffield United have won three of the last four against Derby; our own records hold six meetings since 2021, four to Sheffield United and two to Derby — including a 3-1 Derby win at Bramall Lane in November 2025, before Sheffield United took the return 2-1 last May.

What the models say

Both models point the same way this time, which was not true of Friday night. The outcome model makes it 59.0% Sheffield United, 22.4% Derby and 18.7% a draw — its firmest call on either side in this round. The goals model is more cautious about the same conclusion: working from about 1.55 goals for Sheffield United and 1.03 for Derby, it gives 49.7% Sheffield United, 25.3% Derby and 25.1% the draw.

That gap between them is the interesting part. The goals model leaves a quarter of the probability on a draw because it expects so few goals: 65.4% that the match finishes within one goal, 52.5% that it stays under 2.5, and both teams to score at almost exactly even money, 50.3%. The three likeliest scorelines are 1-0 (12.0%), 1-1 (11.9%) and 2-1 (9.4%). Neither model knows who is fit.
