Championship · Matchday 11 · Turf Moor

Burnley v Wolves

Two sides relegated from the Premier League last season meet on a Friday night to open Matchday 11. Burnley have eight points from ten — one win, five draws, four defeats — and are unbeaten in three, a run that includes a 4-0 win at Watford. They have yet to win at Turf Moor this season, where four of their five home games have finished level; they are one of three clubs in the division still without a home win. Wolves have fourteen points from nine, a game fewer than almost everyone, but arrive having lost both since the international break — 1-0 at Middlesbrough, then 3-1 at home to Bolton. The underlying numbers separate them further than the table does: Wolves have created 1.72 expected goals a game and conceded 1.04, where Burnley have created 1.18 and conceded 1.55.

Wolves come without both senior strikers. Raul Jimenez requires surgery on a knee injury and Adam Armstrong has been ruled out with a back problem, which leaves the teenage Newcastle United loanee Sean Neave — eighteen minutes across four substitute appearances so far this season — as the forward in possession. Rodrigo Gomes, Bertrand Traore, Boubacar Traore and Yerson Mosquera are also unavailable. Asked whether the injuries had opened the door for Neave, head coach César Peixoto said:

“Raul is injured, Adam has a problem in his back, so it’s the moment for Sean.”

Peixoto was careful not to load too much on him, adding that Neave “is not ready to play a lot of minutes, I have to be clear about that”. On the hosts, he said:

“Burnley didn’t start well, but I think in the long term, they will go higher in the Championship, because they have quality.”

The two met twice in the Premier League last season, Wolves losing 3-2 at home in October before a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor in May.

What the models say

Two models run on this fixture and tonight they point different ways. The outcome model makes it 39.8% Wolves, 37.6% Burnley and 22.6% a draw — a gap of 2.3 points between the two sides, the narrowest it has produced on any of the twelve fixtures this matchday. The goals model expects about 1.45 goals for Burnley and 1.06 for Wolves, and summed across every scoreline that reverses the call: 46.2% Burnley, 26.0% the draw, 27.9% Wolves. Rather than print whichever reads better, the split is the finding — one model leans narrowly to the visitors, the other more firmly to the hosts.

What they do agree on is how little room there is in it. The goals model puts it at 67.1% to finish within one goal, with 54.3% for under 2.5 goals and both sides scoring almost exactly a coin toss at 49.7%. The three likeliest scores are 1-1 (12.3%), 1-0 (12.0%) and 2-1 (9.0%) — a flat spread rather than a confident call. Neither model knows that Wolves are without their two senior forwards.
