Championship — the week in brief
Amario Cozier-Duberry made his mark for Middlesbrough at Bolton Wanderers on Friday night, and Bolton staff and former teammates greeted him outside the away dressing room after full-time. The winger spent last season on loan at Bolton, where he made a large impact, and Bolton regulars in the press room spoke warmly of him as a player and a person.
Ten-man Derby County drew at Sheffield United after Dion Sanderson was sent off in the 66th minute for two bookable offences. Bobby Clark put Derby ahead in the first half, Patrick Bamford equalised, and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom made several saves to keep the scores level. Jack Robinson came off the bench as Derby played the closing stages without a recognised centre-back.
Middlesbrough beat Bolton Wanderers 5-1 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Will Lankshear scored twice, Aidan Morris and Amario Cozier-Duberry also scored, and an own goal followed Adilson Malanda’s header. Bolton had recently beaten Norwich City and Wolves, lost narrowly to Stoke City and drawn at Southampton.
Jack Robinson made his Derby County debut as a substitute at Sheffield United, his first competitive appearance since playing for Birmingham City last season. The centre-back signed as a free agent and came off the bench at Bramall Lane as Derby played the last 30 minutes with ten men. Derby play at Millwall this weekend.
Wolves and Watford paid tribute to Kenny Jackett with a minute’s applause before Saturday’s game at Molineux. Jackett, who managed both clubs, passed away this summer. The applause came from both sets of supporters inside the stadium.
Norwich City ended a run of five consecutive Championship defeats with a 3-1 win at Charlton Athletic. Across those five losses, Norwich had been outshot 61-53 and lost the cumulative expected-goals battle 8.62 to 5.33, averaging 10.6 attempts and 1.07 xG per game while conceding 12.2 shots and 1.72 xG. The performance at the Valley showed improved numbers.
