West Ham v QPR

A London derby to open Matchday 9, and the first Championship football since 20 September. West Ham have 15 points from eight — four wins, three draws, one defeat — and have lost only once all season, at home to Charlton in August; their 22 goals and goal difference of plus eleven are both the best in the division. QPR have 13 from eight and have drawn their last three, having been beaten once, at home by Middlesbrough. They have taken eight points from four away matches and have scored more on the road than at Loftus Road.

QPR may be without Glen Kamara. The midfielder, on loan from Rennes, was withdrawn from the Finland squad by his club before their Nations League game against Hungary, and the Finnish federation has said it will refer the matter to Fifa; tonight falls three days after the international window closed. Asked about it in his pre-match media duties, QPR head coach Julien Stephan said:

“There is a dialogue between the club and the Finland federation. We will take a decision after that discussion.”

Kamara has featured in seven of QPR’s eight Championship games this season, three of them from the start.

MAT19:54commentNo player has been involved in more Championship goals this season than West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen (4 goals, 3 assists), while he also ranks second for both shots (32) and chances created (24). He’s having a shot or creating a chance every 13 minutes, the best ratio by a player in a Championship season since Brentford’s Saïd Benrahma in 2018-19 (one every 12 minutes).
MAT19:53commentQPR are one of only two teams unbeaten away from home in the Championship this season (W2 D2), along with West Ham. The Hoops have only managed a longer away unbeaten run from the start of a season twice this century, eventually winning promotion on both occasions: 2010-11 (first nine) and 2013-14 (first five).
MAT19:53commentWest Ham have scored 22 Championship goals in eight games this season, more than any other side. Indeed, all three teams with this many goals after eight games since 2004-05 have gone on to win the league that season – Wolves in 2008-09 (23), QPR in 2010-11 (22) and Coventry in 2025-26 (22).
MAT19:53commentQueens Park Rangers lost their most recent game against West Ham, a 2-1 extra-time defeat in the FA Cup third round last season at the London Stadium. The Hoops haven’t won on any of their last six visits across all competitions (D2 L4) since a 4-0 win in the Premier League in August 1993.
MAT19:52commentWest Ham and QPR haven’t met in the league since the 2014-15 Premier League campaign; the Hammers won 2-0 at Upton Park that season, before the sides shared a 0-0 draw at Loftus Road in April.
MAT19:52commentQPR TEAM NEWS: 5 changes from 2-2 draw against Preston. Raya Kolli makes his first start of the season and replaces Rumarn Burrell who is out the squad injured. Youngster Leon Scarlett drops to the bench and is replaced by P. Smyth. Other changes include Cirkin (suspended out after his red card), Mbengue and Vale who drop out the starting lineup and are replaced by B. Kemper, K. Adamson and J. Clarke-Salter. Obikwu and Kone return to the squad after recovering from injury. Saito has a knock and misses out, as well as Lloyd. Chair also remains out.edited
MAT19:42commentWEST HAM TEAM NEWS: 1 change from the 2-2 draw with Millwall as T. Souček returns to the starting XI for the first time this season after an injury picked up in the World Cup. He replaces J. Piroe. A. Areola returns to the matchday squad for the first time in over a month. Lamadrid is out for this game with injury and Kante is out due to a red card he picked up against Millwall.

What the models say

Two models run on this fixture and they point the same way. The outcome model makes it 62.9% West Ham, 22.3% a draw, 14.9% QPR. The goals model expects about 1.82 goals for West Ham and 0.91 for QPR; summed across every scoreline that gives West Ham 58.8%, the draw 22.4% and QPR 18.8% — the same direction, with the goals model a little less sure of the home side.

The figure worth watching is the margin rather than the score: the goals model puts it at 60.0% to finish within one goal. Past that it declines to lean — 51.4% for over 2.5 goals and exactly even on whether both sides score. The three likeliest scores are 1-0 (12.0%), 2-0 (10.8%) and 1-1 (10.6%): roughly one chance in nine apiece, a flat pile rather than a confident call. Neither model knows who is fit.
